Dunno why this was locked, unlocked it until a reason is provided.....

Maths was a nightmare. I got DSA and hoped it would help cover some specialist software or at least some training in LaTeX... instead they offered to buy me a new battery for my three year old netbook and a notebook that would electronically record what I write... completely missing the point that my writing is illegible.

Ended up just not going to maths lectures in the first semester as I didn't like the lecturer anyway and it was useless trying to take notes. Got a better Professor in the second semester and started going but only to sit there because he told great stories. Did all my work at home where I wasn't under pressure basically. Did some nice fancy notes and stuff

Can I be horrible and ask if you can't write notes or whatever, how do you intend to do jobs and stuff in future? I mean I work with computers all day long but I still have to jot things down on the fly and write notes on people's files and stuff. Seems like a pretty terribad problem you got there chuck.

I work in a lab already, I do a lot of writing out notes on the fly and the main factor is that I just scribble some results down and they get transferred to a computer within the next hour. It's generally just numbers thankfully and writing down results is a memory jog more than anything else, my boss can't read them without me there to translate them. It's the pressure and extended writing length that destroys my coordination. I know that I want to stick in academia after my degree anyway and even if I don't I'll walk out of Uni into a job with the company I'm with now and carry on with my usual system.

If you're ever on the phone good luck trying to take a large amount of notes one handed on a keyboard. Tried many times, but always went back to the ol' notepad and pen.

There isn't a lot of love for laptops on this thread. I have a tidy Toshiba 2.3GHz/6GB RAM/AMD Radeon 7670 HD 2GB and it does everything just fine.

I've had it for a year now so will it explode in 2 years?

I'd guess the little love for laptops is because most people use their computers for gaming

But in my past 2 jobs I've found laptops to be essential

One word:-

UPGRADEABILITY

Laptops just aren't suited for it. In a few years to keep up PC's have to be upgraded which means just a few parts to be swapped out (GPU) etc laptops other than odd ones are impossible to upgrade most items in them, as a result a full replacement is required

Not only that but having an i7 on my legs is likely to set my jeans on fire! Lol

I know, this thing threw out so much heat last winter, I genuinely didn't have to pay for heating from evening use (5-late) - I'm not kidding, this thing raises the ambient temp in the room by 2 or 3 degrees in like half an hour! Only having to use radiator for about an hour each in the morning and before bed was a massive win!

Laptops are good for mobile internet and office. That's it. Anything else: get a desktop.

Or lack of space! As far as I know, I have to move home each summer and my parents have literally no space for a desktop with all three of us there, I'm crammed into a corner of my brothers room...

Is this a viable option then?

Laptops are worse than desktops. But , I admit that it's very easy to get accostumed to a desktop-less life.
