Release of old private forum threads to the public
« on: June 10, 2014, 07:46:49 am »
Maybe this has been done already and I just didn't notice because I'm an inactive derp but how plausible would it be to release old, say pre-2011. threads from private forums into an archive section, on the basis that they are too old to be sensitive anymore?

I take it you mean government private threads? I guess it depends, I mean a lot of the people active then are still alive now, so it could have ramifications if someone said "oh they're a dick" and they're currently our best supporter in a foreign country :p

On the other hand we could probably release all the private congress threads, not that anyone would want to read them.

I doubt it. The most interesting thing to happen in the UKRP forums in the last 3 years was Thomas not being able to see the election sub-forum.

Lol the reason why parties use the sub forums here instead of their own forums is because they are guaranteed privacy.

I don't know why you're interested anyway Goku, you've had multis in every party before.

Implying you have friends. It's not half term, what are you so active for?

If people want access to the old old old threads I can set you up as an archivist who can then see our big archives section, 23 pages of topics from early 2012 and before...

I'm doing a remodelling sometime this week to give a coherent structure to the forum. I could potentially archive all the old congress threads, seeing as they're fairly redundant now anyway and create a blank slate for congress to work from. Then once again it's just a case of me giving you the archivist usergroup.

<Guitah> not arguing with a Brit about tea is tha sensible thing to do :)
<Appleby> it is common knowledge it is pointless arguing with an addict :p
<Appleby> thus it is pointless arguing about tea with brits

Didn't Frerk actively start deleting some of the forums under archives (in deleted posts) during our joint administration? I'm asking because I can't quite remember what he deleted, but he deleted several to a dozen forums.

Some stuff did get deleted, I don't know how much but I believe there is quite a lot in archives in total, I can only see the top layer of it which is only about 8600 posts

That 'some stuff' included 7,000 of my highly intelligent and always valued posts. :ugeek:

Wait, it was that much??? I didn't realise, I have a relatively low and young count so I didn't notice any of mine disappearing, or even if I was subject to it

Can someone explain to me why things need archiving? Is the archive not the chronological list of forum threads? Merge them back into their old forums.

I guess it was to make this look pretty and less cluttered - people complain about anything   "OH IT'S TOO MESSY"
There may also have been an issue with space being needed but don't quote me on that

I know from experience, like the other admins do, that the sheer amount of forums that weren't used in the deleted posts forum was an eyesore and made things difficult to navigate. I did have some fun one day just reading through old posts in old forums.

It makes the place look tidier, something you've been banging on about plenty. UKRP even have our own archive

Look at that list, there's no need for half of them, and I'm not giving myself useless work just to please you. People who are interested in the history can put up with the mess and dig through it whilst everyone else gets a moderately cleaner index

It might have been 6,000 actually, but I remember reaching 20,000 posts and then being ruthlessly cut down whilst in my ascendancy. What made it worse was seeing it happen over a few days and the brushing aside of my desperate pleas for protection. I've never forgiven you since.
