How'd that happen? I mean, how'd you organise a movement like that without a forum?

I think it mostly started when erepublik admins changed how they advertised the game and started attracting a different kind of player.

2008/2009 a lot of people were uni students, or came from other games like cyber nations (Like me) so you had mostly nerdy guys that loved all the bureaucracy and sim.

Sometime around 2011 onwards they seemed to shift to Facebook etc advertising and attracted a more general rabble of people, many that just wanted to click a button and not do all the sim stuff.
The general consensus/narrative among these anti-forum lot was that the forum users were elitist and didn't want to share power, which for some parties that was 100% correct.

It has definitely been a slow death, I've been playing since Dec 2008, and I've seen it very very slowly decline. In 2009 when I ran the Navy we had like 1k active UK soldiers, 3k if you include Home Guard, then Legion in 2011-12ish we had 300odd active fighters but with the other MUs we had maybe 2 or 3 times that total. Now it's much much less something like less than 100 players actually fighting each day.

I think, if the admins had left the game as it was before all the changes and just generally improve things we wouldn't have seen the decline we have now. The game is essentially just a cash cow for them now.

Ah, thought so. Seems the game hit peak ~2009-10 and just gradually sloped down from there. Just wondered if there'd been any particular event which had killed activity dead, but the more boring gradual answer probably makes more sense.

There was also a fairly popular anti-forum movement by a lot of the newer players

Nope

Why'd this place shut down, out of interest? If you've got the appetite for an explanation.

It didn't shut down from our end.

Erepublik as a game has been in massive decline for years now, 99.99% of the old players are gone, the ones that used this forum.
There was also a fairly popular anti-forum movement by a lot of the newer players, so there was less and less need/want for people to come here.

We also re branded the forums as a general gaming forum to try to help but we were pretty much in free fall.

The forums are practically dead but it's not going anywhere, I'm still gonna stick about and log in every other day or so and it's here and free for people to use if they want.
