Stop spying on us
« on: July 28, 2013, 05:03:43 pm »
So it turns out that admins now have access to all the private party forums.  That's something which was stamped out a long time ago and I can only assume this changed when the forums were migrated to this software.

It's something that should have been dealt with immediately.

The only reason I know this is because Butjam just posted in the TUP forum.  I won't reveal the content since I'd probably get banned for leaking :P  Let's just say he hasn't understood that this is fundamentally wrong.

I assume moderators don't share this level of access???  Anyway, fix it immediately please.  Ban yourself while you're at it Butjam, since this is obviously an abuse of your position  (/_<)

To be in both the UKRP and TUP forums at once is a heinous crime

<Appleby> it is common knowledge it is pointless arguing with an addict :p
<Appleby> thus it is pointless arguing about tea with brits

Mods don't have that access no. I also can't alter administrator permissions and stuff like that, that has to come from Kumnaa as far as I can see.

I know its wrong that I read the thread, since becoming admin I've just marked posts from other parties as read. This hasn't been an issue as it has been UKRP actually active, which I am a member of, a games thread or something which is clearly not for me to read. This time I saw the board title 'general' and thought I should make a contribution, not realising that it was the wrog board.

Once again, I apologise profusely, I'd hope that people know me well enough to know that I don't give a damn about stuff enough to spy on people, and that I'm just glad that the thread I've made a mistake like this on isn't full of sensitive information.

Until kumnaa fixes it I'll use the 'show unread' functions from the board index to make sure this doesn't happen again

It shouldn't require you making a mistake by posting in a forum you shouldn't have access to for it to be spotted.  You should have realised that you shouldn't have the access ages ago and dealt with it then.

Whether you're actively spying on parties or not, the only way for people to be sure is if you don't have access and aren't able to grant yourself access.

I'm always able to grant access to myself but we have logs for that fortunately.

As I said, I cannot physically change the admin group myself, I will carry on hunting for a fix now but as far as I know at the moment, it needs Kumnaa intervention

Admin group is set to all access, creating a new group and setting that with all the backend permissions and no additional view rights is the solution...but I sincerely doubt butjam gets around to doing that, as it would not only require him to put forth effort, but strip him of his access to things.

This is the closest fix/situation I've found so far, it just seems arduous and time consuming. Will post more possible solutions as I trawl.

Butjam is the greatest, smartest admin on any internet forum. What could go wrong?

Or just do what I said, as it's much easier than reading all the forums to find out that what I said is the solution.

But, like I said...that would require effort from butjam.

In a related issue I was told when the new forums came up that Invalidation was on the TUP forums. Is this still the case? If so shouldn't he be removed as he isn't TUP in game?

It's related because the old forums had a one party forum per account rule. You couldn't be on two party forums, or in one party in game and another on the forums unless you left the country.

More solutions, this would require some PHP editing and is incredibly messy.

Pfeiffer, your suggestion doesn't work because I need core admin privileges.

I disagree.

One of the main jobs of the Admin is to act as policeman on ALL boards. If illegal (RL illegal not eRep) content is posted in a private forum the owners/admins will still be responsible for it. Just because TUP have something to hide does not absolve the Admins from legal responsibility

No, you don't. You make the new group, then you put yourself in it, then you get yourself removed from the Admin group. I can't remember if you can remove yourself from groups...been a long time since I've used it.

I disagree.

Which is why kumnaa (as owner) exists. He's legally responsible, if he wants to not pay attention that's fine.

While that's true - and no matter what, the responsibility lies with the admin - the job of ensuring everything in order for the party forums is established as being delegated to party and who it chooses.

That is a great point, the admins do probably need to be able to see everything because they are liable for child porn etc...

The real issue I think isn't an all seeing admin, it's a politically active in one party all seeing admin. Just yesterday I had Butjam crack down on me for mentioning his party as a consistent supporter of legislation. I think he has done a decent job but he probally needs to step back from UKRP and it's coalition.

I don't need access myself though, that's the argument. It's the board moderators responsibility to make sure illegal stuff isn't there, then I should give myself access to investigate. I fully understand the grievance, especially seeing as this is a competitive game and I'm in another team.

If I can figure out how to make a group with core admin privileges that don't access all boards, then I can have that made, Frerk and myself shifted to there and Kumnaa (who doesn't play) would be fine to have unrestricted access.

I think having someone who can do everything is more important than me accidentally seeing a PP primary result though, as Frerk and Kumnaa are both tied up in RL stuff at the moment I am unwilling to nerf my ability to edit and make changes to the forums.

I just ask people to remember that I have been trusted with the countries money before now, almost all the buttons (6 flowerig votes <_<) and the wealth of information that comes from being admin anyway. After all of this, my biggest abuse of power has been editing someones post to boost my ego

Oh, and Goku, you can ask Talon and Mantle who were involved in a snooker game when your post came up, I locked it because it was the biggest and lowest hanging fruit for even more insults and abuse I've sewn in a while. In case you forget, I gave you suggestions for how to open it in a more constructive manner and it worked, we got a sensible thread from it.

As far as I understand from my reading on the situation, there are certain abilities available only to members of the core admin group.

Also, I don't think I can remove myself from the admin group, not tried though

Pretty sure there isn't anything you use that you wouldn't be able to sue under my proposal. Have you looked at how many permissions actually exist? There are dozens.
