Christopher Hitchens Dies
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:53:49 pm »
This isn't quite brain zone material, and so to make sure this is in the right section I'll borrow his.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16212418

I'm a bit late but Hitchens is one of my favourite people in the world, I've read a few of his books and have another coming. He's just the worlds greatest skeptic and his writing is alway perfect.

RIP Hitch ;_;

Not my favourite person in the world, but better than most I guess. When did he die?

I imagine it would be something to do with Hitchens being an outspoken atheist.

I have no problem with atheism, I just don't like it when people make invalid assumptions about you based on their own prejudices. And that's what he was- an extremely prejudiced person who used those prejudices as willfully as any daily mail columnist. It's just his particular version of extremism tended to appeal to a different audience.

Can you debate theism and not be prejudice against it? Surely if you're not prejudice you're an agnostic which Hitchens never claimed to be and so never went against anything he said? Having said that, I understand your point.

Again it's not about the position it's about the way he went about it. There is a big difference between for example saying:

"I find Christianity philosophically weak, and I find the history of the Christian church to practice non-Christian ethics which I find to be immoral"

and

"All Christians are essentially morons who can't think for themselves, molest children and worship an invisible zombie in the sky"

The first one is acceptable and is a philosophical position, whereas the second one is just someone too lazy to engage something properly making trite comments. What annoyed me about him is that he was perfectly capable of doing the former, but spent all his time thinking of trite little catchphrases to trot out instead. It's those scathing but childish attacks he'll be remembered for. And that wasn't just in his criticism of religion- it was an aspect of everything he did. It meant he was, like I said, using the same tactics as the Daily Mail or Jeremy Clarkson, just with a different set of views.
