I used to play (you may not be surprised) but stopped doing so when I went to university as there was nobody good to play who wasn't a total social outcast.

I still play sometimes to help people develop their game.

I love chess. I was taught when I was 6 or something similar, and play it on various family occasions, it's a kind of tradition.

I was taught at 6.

Never too good at first, but Iguess I'm decent now.

My grandpa has trophies for Chess lol. He used to play competitively often, and used to take me with him. Shame I never really grasped the game as well as he did, though I'd like to think I'm still pretty good.

Would be cool if we could have a Swiss tournament. Also if you have a grade, post it here so we can get an idea of your skill level (I'm ungraded :3).

I admire chess and have a lot of respect for people who play it, but it's not a sport.

Officially, it is. Anyway that's another argument.

If it's recognised by the Olympic 'Games', that just makes it a game, right?

No, it isn't recognised by the "Olympic 'games'". It's officially listed as a sport by the International Olympic Committee.

Are they the people who administrate the Olympic Games?

They're the closest thing to a global governing body of sport, they also organise the biggest sporting event in the world, yes. Chess isn't an olympic sport though, it's just officially recognised as a sport. You can argue whether it should be or not, but that's a different matter.

Either way this thread is for chess players, make a new thread if you want to argue whether it's a sport or not.

I used to play. The lack of competition + the fact I went undefeated for 2.5 years may have had something to do with why I don't any more.
