Champions League Final
« on: May 29, 2011, 03:36:07 pm »
Amazed we didnt have a thread about this. Man Utd got absolutely romped by Barca. Seems to me that Fergie got the system completely wrong again, United were flooded in midfield and didnt have the right characters to deal with it; an ageing Giggs and a quiet Carrick are hardly the right men to deal with the trio of Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. Vidic never really knew whether to stay or go in respect to Messi - at times hurtling out like a stream train, and at others too hesitant to act.

That said, Barca were sensational. Messi was probably the best I've ever seen him, bar that hat trick against Arsenal, Villa looked to have regained some of his edge following his barren spell.

Thoughts?

Agreed. United needed an extra body in there. Shouldn't have started with Chicarito, and had a 3rd body in centre midfield, allowing for 1 of the trio to drop back to put more pressure on Messi, without leaving space behind if one of the centre backs moved forward to take the space instead.

To be fair united played fairly well, they just couldn't compete with Barcelona. Rooney's goal was great.

Good to see Rooney finally get a goal on a big occasion. Messi was incredible; I can think of very few defenders in history who could have dealt with him.

You can't say that Man United got the system wrong.
It was just Barca, They are amazing.

Barca were simply the better team. Fergie gambled on the bench... should have brought Berba on the bench instead of fucking Owen. Michael Owen is a colossal waste of space, air, and money. Obviously Fergie was planning on offloading him since he didn't include him. Besides that, Giggs and Hernandez were nearly invisible. We didn't rise to the occasion like Barca always seems to do. It was one of the hardest games for me to watch. Vidic played great and I'd say that Rooney had a pretty damn good game as well (at least compared to his other 'big' games). After they scored that second goal I knew it was over and felt so damn empty knowing we didn't have the stuff to bring it back. :/

Carrick was so invisible you didn't even notice him being invisible.

To be fair Giggs set Rooney's goal up, even if he was offside.

Besides that, he didn't contribute too much. The midfield in general was nothing special. The only reason we saw a lot of Valencia was because of his ill-timed tackling all game.

It was a great game but in the end the better team won.

If Arsenal can beat them, so can United. "In 90 minutes anything can happen"

Ferguson should have asked Rafa for advice on how to beat Barcelona instead of Mourinho.
