Anyone who studies foreign affairs knows that when a state becomes the strongest in the world hegemony is a natural development.

Friedrich von Hayek, '"The road to serfdom". Strong case against centrally-planned economies.Hayek writes that the government has a role to play in the economy through the monetary system and work-hours regulation.

Candide - Volatire

One of the funniest book I have ever read. Volatire is a top class piss taker and his philosophical tales illustrated what was wrong with the thinking of the time. A book that really entertains with his sharp wit to express his ideas. I was laughing so hard I nearly feel out of my bed reading it. Thought his humour wouldn't translate so well from French so was pleasantly surprised. Some of the best short stories I have read. :)

Yep Candide is brilliant, easily one of the best books I have ever read!

I think the last book I read was 'The Catcher in the Rye' for the second time, the last book I read for the first time was Cormac Mcarthy's 'The Road', which is amazing!!

Am reading Miguel Cervantes 'Don Quixote' atm, have a looooooong list of books to read actually, including 'War and Peace' and 'The Brother's Karamazov', may take me awhile to get through all that lol

yeah, Candide I thought was going to be just philosphy story book and turns out to be side splitting :D Some passages in there are classic.

ooo I have tried War and Peace about 100x but never got very far with it. Think will take ages to get through that. lol Just started Crime and Punishment. Hope it's going to be good. :)

The pace of the book as well, just serves to make it all the funnier.

Another favourite of my and also very funny is Jonathan Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels', birilliant book and some parts are hilarious as well. More a statement on society at is time as opposed to a philosophical endeavour like Candide.

Yeah I have tried and failed to read 'War and Peace' once already, I think I shall come to it last, so that I have no other books to distract me, although if I take that stance maybe i'll never get to it lol

Halo series of books. Starts before the game (Fall of Reach), during, and at the end too, although set in a different during the same events (Ghosts of Onyx). Contact Harvest is the initial contact with the Covenant. All very good books, although 'The Flood' wasn't as good as the others, and only finished for the sake of continuity because I haven't played the games.

'The Fall of Reach' - Eric Nylund
'The Flood' - William C Dietz
'First Strike' - Eric Nylund
'Ghosts of Onyx' - Eric Nylund
'Contact Harvest' - Joseph Stater

'Band of Brothers' - Good read for the experiences of the men, more in depth than the TV series, obviously.

'Flashman' by George MacDonald Fraser - Very funny book. First of the series, and I intend to finish it. 19th century adventures of a complete twat roaming around the British empire.

'World War Z' - If you're into zombie stuff, you've probably read this already. If not, then you should.
'Zombie Survival Guide' - Not as good, and a bit tedious to finish at some points. Treating a zombie apocalypse as a hypothetical situation is always fun, and the guy done his research for the most part, but I disagree with his choice on firearms. He's wrong. Both books by Max Brooks.

'I am Legend' by Richard Matheson - Excellent book. Just finished this, and I've got to be honest, it's completely different from the film, and many, many times better. To be honest, I can't even remember why the film was called 'I am legend', come to think about it. I won't divulge anything about the book, to avoid spoiling it. It was also written in the 50's, and still pretty current if you like.

'Master & Commander' - Patrick O'Brian - Way better than the movie, and a very good read, so good I bought the other 19 books and read those too.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime - Mark Haddon

Reading it for the second time, a fascinating way to see into the mind of someone with Aspergers Syndrome and how it affects people, also pretty funny and very well written.

I read Young Stalin, and reread A history of modern britain (marr) this month, and I constantly cycle through trashy sci-fi/fantasy/supernatural novels for relaxation. I also read a few science/economics books, but none this month.

Just finished "The Stars My Destination" by Alfred Bester. Absolutely fantastic sci-fi written in the 50s - I highly recommend it.

I'm reading the K. J. Parker Fencer trilogy atm. Pretty good if slightly obscure fantasy. Very detailed about the construction of swords/bows/siege weapons/armour. Has the added bonus of knowing the author can and has made all the military equipment described in the book with his own hands
