In my opinion, if it was brought back it should only be used on the most serious offenders.

An example would be Steven Wright.

The death penalty should apply to every person who has entered X-Factor or another similar contest and been serious about it.

`You know they've reintroduced the death penalty for insurance company directors?'
`Really?' said Arthur. `No I didn't. For what offence?'
Trillian frowned.
`What do you mean, offence?'
`I see.'

They keep people on death row for two long. All these long drawn out trials, appeals etc. If they're certain (as they could be) that the person is guilty, none of this death row nonsense, just take them out the back and shoot them. That would be the most cost effective way of doing it, but ofc that's really immoral and you have to take into account rights and stuff. If the penalty was brought back, it should be made cheaper.

Agreed.

Also I think it's kinda sick that what people seem to care most about is the cost. Jesus I think just threw up a bit in my mouth.

By carrying out a death penalty, you are killing somebody because (in most cases) they killed somebody. So we have a right to decide who lives or dies but these murderers don't. No one has the right to decide whether another human being dies or not, no one.

One word: justice.

Why are you all picking up on the point of cost, that was a sidenote - not the main reason why the death penalty should be instated.
The difference between people is not how they behave but how they are treated.

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.

People keep bringing up the cost, because cost is relevant.

The goal of a justice system should be to help ensure the most functional and happy society as possible, through protecting people from criminals and through reeducating the criminals. Where does cost come into this, then?
It's simple: There is a point at which the money spent on the justice system would be more beneficial to society spent elsewhere.

If - for an extreme example - it would cost £100,000 to execute a dangerous criminal, £200,000 to imprison them indefinitely and £100,000 to give lifesaving operations to five people... then it pretty much becomes morally better to execute the criminal, despite the fact you're killing someone.

Of course, it's never that simple - in the above example, the best option would probably be to raise taxes, then both not execute the criminal and give the lifesaving operation; but it illustrates how cost comes into the equation.
This is a signature. It is hilarious.

Justice means nothing to me, except maybe revenge, another nonsensical notion. To me, the only function of any "justice" system is to bring as big a benefit to society as possible through the rehabilitation and removal of prisoners, with recompense (ie, hard labour) also being an option. The death penalty brings no benefit to society whatsoever, that cannot be brought about through other means.
